we are raising our maiden funding round
by Sridipto Ghosh on February 12, 2025
This post is a bit off-track. It is not a technical one or about what we are building, but, quite critical in terms of the next steps in our journey.
Last week, I was talking to an investor - he understood the product, the vision, and the risk behind Light. Where it got interesting was the way he approached the investment.
"As an investor, if I have $3m, I would not bet all on this - rather put $300k, and the rest on SaaS, or consumer brands (such companies will give me decent returns). However, I would bet on something like this, as an investor I don't get to invest in such companies every other day. Could this possibly make me a billion dollars, probably yes! This is an extreme-risk, extreme-reward game - risky but worth trying."
Moving forward, I sensed he was skeptical about this happening from India - he genuinely asked, "Do you think this can be built from India"? I feel at an engineering ecosystem level this can be built, however from a capital requirement point after a certain point, the US is the place.
His remark on the same was as follows:
"With good intent, the Indian VC ecosystem is yet to be there to build such companies from India. The entrepreneurial success of the US owes to the amount of risk capital you can raise. As Jeff Bezos said US has the best risk capital. I would suggest raising a seed round in India, moving to the Valley, and building there. As put together by the likes of a16z, Y Combinator - this is indeed becoming a global thesis, so Silicon Valley is the place to build it from!"
However, I can see the capital ecosystem evolving and the government heavily investing, India will see such companies built from here - just from the number of investors who have shown interest (within hardly 2 weeks into fundraising) in what we are trying to build, I can see that happening very soon.
To be honest, we thought about it quite a few times and we are still evaluating whether we should move to the US, and build it there.
Please feel free to write your thoughts at sri@lbtf.tech about what you think - can this be built from India?
We are still raising, maybe we will get a $300k commitment soon, but we need another $700k, feel free to fill the gap. Thanks in advance! :)
